First of all: Happy New Year! Also, sorry for not updating this blog for months: I've been busy.
I have left Japan temporarily, swapped it in for a much warmer, but less weird country Down Under. This was a good decision. Lately I started to get a bit tired of Japan. Especially the politicial climate started to bug me more and more. The winning conservative party has already tried to take back their 1995 apology to Korean ' comfort women', forced sex workers in WWII. Nice going, Japan. Relations with China seem to be worsening, and I still feel like one of the monkeus living in the hills. A drive-by greeting is not uncommon, which is when Japanese people wave to the blond gints at the side of the road waiting for the lights to turn green.
Anyway, Japan is a country of extremes: it's extremely awesome and people are wonderfully nice, but an open mind is hard to find. Both male and female students in my ' English Cafe' conversation class thought feminism was' treating girls nicely'.

I've been in Melbourne for over 2 weeks, and it has been lovely. Temperatures range from pleasont to hot hot hot (2 days ago: 43 degrees!). I saw heaps of culture and nature here and most of all, it's great to see my friends from my last exchange in Sweden again. I've been staying in Lucy's house for the last weeks. Regan flew in on my birthday and Margot came some days later. Yesterday, she drove us to Canberra, where she lives, and we'll be spending a couple of days here before we head for Sydney for the rest of our Major Ozzie Road Trip.

Some highlights until now:
- Cool art @ Melbourne museums
- Biking around the Yarra River
- Seeing wild penguins and possums (!) and beautiful birds
- Going to Healesville Zoo with Lu & Re to see koalas, kangaroos, taipan-snakes and, best of all, duck-billed platypi
- The general food situation is pretty good
- Birthdays! mine: picnic @ the beach. Lucy's: Chillin' in the pool all day, afterparty @ LUWOW tiki bar. With gogo-dancers!
- Seeing my friend Andy that I met in a hostel in Seoul.
- New Years: spent at Lucy's sister Alice's house
- Relaxing on the beach of Sorrento, Melbourne Bay, where Lucy's family has a summer house

I'm very much excited about being in Canberra and going to Sydney. Next week, I'm flying back to Osaka for a couple of days (goodbye party), and then I'll be back home in the NL on Jan 15th. See you then!

    Astrid:

    Penguins + Possums + Platypi = Paradise

Nog gefeliciteerd met je verjaardag Albert! Meanwhile in Maleisie was er geen hond te zien. They don't like dogs in Malasia. They like cats, but they also like to put knots in their tails. Pretty strange place too. It felt a bit too much like the british twilight zone - with a Harrods inside the hotel. Next time I'll just come and visit you and the platypi in Australia instead. xx
